  He may not have been the biggest donor—standing less than five feet tall—but Darius Williams definitely stood out at ESPN Austin’s all day live fundraising broadcast from the Oak Hill Youth Sports Association (OHYSA) baseball fields on Friday, November 1st.

• Oak Hill Youth Sports complex hit by major flood damage

  A record rainfall— with measured totals in Oak Hill ranging from 9.53 to 11.26 inches over a six-hour period last Saturday night—caused Williamson Creek to overflow its banks, flooding homes and businesses, and making the Oak Hill baseball and softball fields unusable for the foreseeable future.

  According to Stephen Bega, president of the Oak Hill Youth Sports Association (OHYSA), which owns and runs the sports complex at U.S. 290 West and Joe Tanner Lane, repair of the ballfields may cost $100,000.

  The damage is a blow to an organization still reeling from the City of Austin’s recent decision to cancel the utility subsidy to OHYSA, which will result in a $40,000 budget shortfall for the sports group.

  Bega told the Gazette, “I have no idea how much rain actually fell, but based on the debris on the fence line, we suspect we had standing water in the complex of at least four feet.”

  Students stormed the court in celebration Tuesday night. “I’m speechless,” Austin High coach Andy Dudney said immediately after Austin High’s victory over Westlake. “This game never disappoints. It’s the greatest high school rivalry that exists.”

  As guard for the Crockett girls’ basketball team, Darcy Lof plays an important role for a Lady Cougar team intent on pressing defensively and scoring with multiple fast break opportunities. “Darcy has improved tremendously on the basketball court from the time she started our program as a freshman. Most of that can be attributed to her work ethic and internal drive for success,” coach Jennifer Shuttlesworth said. “She transfers that same drive for success to the classroom.”

  Holding down the important left tackle position for the Austin High football team, Daniel Laden proved extremely valuable, starting all ten games despite suffering a sprained ankle at Del Valle. The 6’7” 250 lb. lineman is now dedicated to preparing for the 2013 season with a returning quarterback, two additional veteran offensive linemen and a pair of talented running backs.

  After missing every district game last year while recovering from an elbow injury, Caitlin Rendon is glad the Austin High girls’ basketball season is underway. “Caitlin has been on the varsity since the middle of her sophomore year,” coach Tricia Johnson said of her 6’0” center. “She is a hard worker on and off the court. She listens, executes, is a leader by her example.”

• Bowie Band ends season on a high note

  Assistant band director Stephen Howard said of the band, “Bowie’s season has been nothing short of incredible. Between the overwhelming support of the community and the high level of dedication and hard work ethic of our students, we could not ask for more. This year has been a rewarding journey both on and off the field. Each time the students took the field we saw them gain strength, confidence, and unity.”

  Cedar Park crushed Crockett’s playoff run 65-7 Thursday night at Gupton Stadium, with a powerful defense that swarmed the Cougar offensive skill position players. Crockett (3-7, 2-3) completed their season, while Cedar Park (9-2, 6-0) advanced to face the winner of Saturday’s contest between Kerville Tivy and San Antonio Jefferson in the second round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs.

• Defense leads Bowie to bi-district win over Round Rock

  Two defensive touchdowns in the third quarter propelled Bowie to a 27-17 bi-district victory over Round Rock Friday night at Burger Stadium.

  “It was a good defensive effort,” said Preston Miller, who scored Bowie’s last touchdown on a pick six interception return for a score. Bowie (7-4) moves into the area round to face Spring Westfield (11-0) next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Brenham.
